News from Hynish February 2026

Lots has been happening at Hynish! We’ve made great progress since we last updated you all. Here are a few of the headlines.

We are pleased to welcome the MacDonald family to the recently refurbished Cottage in Lower Square: Failte!! We hope you love your new house and enjoy becoming part of the Hynish community.

Big Sky Books have had a fabulous few weeks and Jo will be staying put in Morton Boyd Cottage. We can’t wait to see what you do next, Jo!

We’ve gone out to tender for the work on the Lighthouse Cottages at Upper Square; this is being funded through the Scottish Government Island Fund. Once a contractor is appointed, work will begin in April.

Things are well underway on the infrastructure project: car parks and fencing are nearly complete, the trail has started and we are very excited to see it all coming together.  Cameron Smith and the Tiree Team have done a great job. This project will be completed at the end of March/early April. There will be a formal launch event in May – details in the next edition.

The acoustic ceiling insulation in Alan Stevenson House is now finished.  Our thanks to CKR who did a great job on time and budget: Aisling and Kris have reopened their doors ahead of Valentine’s Day and are looking forward to another jam-packed season!

Perhaps our biggest news is that the National Lottery Heritage Fund has approved our application, and we have been awarded funding for 2 full-time posts (2-year contracts) at Hynish. We will soon be advertising for a Heritage Officer and a Sustainability Development Officer. This funding will allow us to progress the site to a new level and put the Skerryvore Lighthouse Shore Station on the map for many years to come.
