About Us

The Hynish Lighthouse Shore Station is run by the Hynish Trust. We think it is a special place, and we hope you do, too.

Our Vision

We celebrate Hynish as a nationally important example of a nineteenth-century lighthouse shore station and Skerryvore lighthouse as ‘the noblest of all extant deep-sea lights’. We will use these structures and their stories, and the genius of Alan Stevenson, as our inspiration to create, for the benefit of Tiree, a modern, vibrant community where people want to live, work and visit.

Our Values

We celebrate community ownership of the Hynish lighthouse shore station.

We are responsible for the lighthouse shore station, and understand that a successful Hynish benefits the whole island.

We are sustainable, working towards a long-term future that is viable both financially, socially and environmentally.

We are rooted in the powerful heritage of the place whilst embracing new technology and fresh ideas.

We collaborate with partner organisations on and off island, and with the Tiree community, to maximise resources, skills, and knowledge.

Our Objectives

  1. To create employment opportunities through the provision of flexible workspace and skills training.
  2. To address the chronic shortage of affordable housing in the community for key workers and people on low incomes.
  3. To provide performance, rehearsal, learning and/or exhibition space for arts and cultural activities.
  4. To provide recreational facilities.
  5. To preserve the lighthouse shore station at Hynish, and other features of historic, prehistoric and/or architectural significance in
    the vicinity.
  6. To increase public knowledge and awareness of the historic lighthouse shore station at Hynish as well as Skerryvore lighthouse
    and other relevant topics.

The lighthouse shore station as an entity would not have survived without the outstanding work of Mike Stanfield and the Hebridean Trust. This was set up in 1982, raising the funds to buy the twenty buildings that make up the site, renovating them to an exacting historical standard, and then running the project for some thirty years.

We would like to thank Mike Stanfield, Ian Boyd, Alan Smith, Lucien Paul Stanfield and the late Robert Taylor for their inspirational work over four decades.

In June 2024, the Hebridean Trust gifted the site to the Tiree community, and the Hynish Trust was formed to take this project forward. You can see our new Articles of Association below, as well as the exciting Development Plan for Hynish!

Fair Work

Hynish Trust attaches great importance to principles of “Fair Work First” as set out in the Scottish Government guidelines.   Fair working practices are adopted and are fundamental to the culture of the organisation. We pledge to:

  • Pay at least the real Living Wage for all categories of work including seasonal/part time
  • Provide appropriate channels for effective workers’ voice through regular team meetings, employee survey and the performance review process
  • Investment in workforce development – everyone has a personal development plan
  • No inappropriate use of zero hours contracts
  • Action to tackle the gender pay gap and create a more diverse and inclusive workplace
  • Offer flexible and family friendly working practices for all workers from day one of employment
  • Oppose the use of fire and rehire practice.
  • Our responsibility is to our community, and we aim to be role model employers on the island.
